Gospel Yarning Cross Cultural Evangelism Conference

Event Details

Gospel Yarning is a cross-cultural gathering on evangelism in the Uniting Church.  A great strength of the Uniting Church is our cultural diversity, so we will hear and build up one another in new wisdom for faith-sharing in many different ways.  In the recent past, our evangelism has not been strong.  We seek to establish the Uniting Church as a servant of the Gospel for our next forty years.

Who is it for?

Places have been reserved for several cross-cultural and evangelism organisations in the NSW/ACT Synod and Australia-wide.  AND we want the whole church to be aware that it is happening so you will be expectant, prayerful and attend the evening celebrations here.

Who is behind it?

This event is hosted by a working group from the Synod of NSW & ACT and it is open to the church Australia-wide.

The host-partners are:

  • the Moderator NSW & ACT Synod,
  • Uniting Mission and Education,
  • The Alan Walker College, and
  • Uniting World.

The occasion in 2017 is the 40th birthday of the Uniting Church in Australia, while remembering also the 50th anniversary of the Federal Referendum to recognise Aboriginal persons, and the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.

The working group have prioritised the word “cross-cultural” in preference to ‘multicultural’ or ‘intercultural’, though they are all good words, in order to hold us closer to our theme.

Core Question:

“How can we as the Uniting Church learn from each other to be a church that serves the Gospel in changing contexts?”

Conference Aims:
  • We will affirm the centrality of evangelism in our church at our 40th anniversary.
  • We will learn from each other – Uniting churches reflecting Asian, Pacific, Anglo, Middle Eastern, African and Aboriginal perspectives – and discover afresh our calling in the mission of God.
  • We will publish the papers, prayers and reflections from the conference by November 30 2017, expecting ongoing growth.  We do not have to solve all the issues in one conference.
  • All participants will leave with stronger relationships, a renewed sense of God’s calling for them in evangelism, and a strong visual symbol of what has been achieved so they can talk about it at home immediately.
