Uniting Church Schools and Colleges in NSW

Uniting Church Schools and Colleges in NSW

There are 9 UCA Schools within the Synod of NSW and the ACT.  At The University of Sydney, Wesley College is the Uniting Church residential college.  The combined student numbers are approximately 10,000, including 600 boarders and about 1,350 staff.  There are 12 chaplains ministering in these educational institutions.

The schools are constituted by the Synod as either incorporated or unincorporated entities (except Newington and Wesley which have their own constitutions) and linked to the Synod through the Schools Relationship and Governance Manager.  All of the schools support the Uniting Church ethos and Chairs, Principals and Chaplains meet regularly with representatives of the Church to ensure close communication.

Schools Relationship and Governance Manager

Anne Empson provides a link between the Synod and the schools:

  • The School Relationship and Governance Manager, Anne Empson, is the Synod’s nominee on 5 of the school councils as an ex-officio member and also serves as a member on Margaret Jurd college which is separately incorporated. This entails attending meetings, selected committee meetings, resourcing those councils, maintaining the ethos, culture, expectations and processes the Church, facilitating Synod approvals such as loans, property and building, insurance and legal transactions.
  • The Synod’s representative on the Independent Schools Consultative Committee of the Association of Independent Schools Association in NSW and the National Schools Education Group.
  • The co-ordinator of schools chaplaincy appointments and related matters as well as organising the annual Schools Religious Educators and Chaplains workshop.
