Executive Director | Role Opportunity

The Uniting Church of Australia (UCA) is one of the largest not for profit and faith-based organisations in Australia.

Uniting Mission and Education (UME), as one of four boards of the Synod of NSW and the ACT, has the role of leading and resourcing the Synod in discipleship, mission and leadership in order to serve Christ. UME assists the Church to provide education, theological insight, strategy, research and resources for leadership, discipleship, ministry and mission. UME manages the operations of United Theological College (UTC), a partner in the Charles Sturt University, School of Theology.

The Executive Director position will provide overall leadership to Uniting Mission and Education. This position reports to the General Secretary (CEO equivalent) and UME Board Chair jointly, and is a key member of the Synod’s Senior Leadership Team.

The role has responsibility for the overall operation and management of Uniting Mission and Education and its effective interaction with other Synod entities. The incumbent will need to possess a deep understanding of the Uniting Church, a strong personal faith in Christ, and a commitment to spirituality in Christian life and practice.

This is a forward thinking, strategic, creative role tasked with leading a transformational change process with the mission of God at its heart supported by an effective business model.

The keys to success will be your ability to execute plans and achieve outcomes by working collegially to turn strategic concepts, ideas and decisions into actions and results in a timely, efficient, quality manner; building trust and managing complex and multi-directional relationships effectively; exceptional communication skills; strategic thinking with the ability to contribute to the shaping and articulation of an appropriate vision; and effectively balancing multiple priorities.

Key elements of the role include:

  • To provide strategic advice to the UME Board to achieve UME’s mission and to ensure strategies, goals and programs agreed by the Board are accomplished
  • Reshaping the operations of UME to align the organisation with both identified and emerging Synod and Board strategic priorities
  • Strong and effective leadership of a complex organisation including leadership of the executive team responsible for UTC, Mission Strategy, Mission Enablement and Vital Leadership functions
  • Representing UME and develop and ensuring effective relationships are sustained within and across the Synod
  • Facilitating mutual communication between UME, the Synod Boards and management, presbyteries and congregations and other Synod bodies
  • Ensuring that agreed financial outcomes are achieved including oversight of the Budget
  • Ensure effective governance and compliance with all regulatory requirements, and the effective identification and management of risk

Our successful candidate will demonstrate to our selection panel they have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in relevant areas such as leadership, administration, theology or mission
  • UCA membership, combined with a strong understanding of the UCA and its theology, ethos, structures, practices, ministry, mission and education activities.
  • A strong understanding and passion for discipleship, mission and leadership and a passion and calling to serve Christ in these areas
  • Demonstrated ability to work and lead in complex organisations with the capacity to fulfil pastoral responsibilities
  • Sound understanding of, and experience with, business financials and operations
  • A NSW Working with Children Clearance, an entitlement to work in Australia and a current NSW Drivers Licence

In addition, any or all of the following; theological qualifications or training; experience of leadership in the UCA in discipleship, mission, leadership or in education that supports these goals; and direct involvement with the development and delivery of strategic and risk management plans to Boards (or similar) would be considered highly desirable.
