The word theology means to talk about God. Theology is about faith seeking understanding. It’s about trying to answer those questions put by Jesus of Nazareth: “who do people say that I am? Who do you say that I am?”

Theology invites us to think seriously about what we believe and why we believe it — and about how this belief should shape the way we live.

Theology is always “more than what we think”. It is a quest not only for knowledge, but for wisdom, as we seek to be Christ’s faithful disciples in our own unique time and place.

Once upon a time, only those studying for the ministry of a particular church would study theology. That’s no longer the case. The great majority of students these days will never be “reverends”. So why are people taking the plunge? Why study theology?

As well as helping us to understand our own faith better, theology can also help to equip us for Christian life and service in our changing world. The church — the body of Christ — needs people who are theologically informed. We live in a complex secular, multifaith, multicultural world. Understanding our faith can help the church to find its place in this complex world.

So why not take the plunge? There has never been a better time to study theology.
